Jose Emiliano Aguilar, 24, was arrested on March 14 for attempting to smuggle four Chinese nationals. They were stuffed in the trunk of Aguilar’s 2014 Chrysler 200 from Mexico into San Diego. Officers found three women and one man who had no legal ability to enter the United States. Two of them said they were headed towards Los Angeles, the two others said they were going to New York. The four Chinese women and one man were placed under an immigration hold while awaiting deportation proceedings. Jose Emiliano Aguilar turned out to be son of famous mariachi star, Pepe Aguilar. Pepe Aguilar has won Grammy and Latin Grammy awards and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. Aguilar’s attorney, Jeremy Warren, wrote: “We understand the interest in our client Jose Aguilar because of his father’s musical career. However, this case has nothing to do with Pepe Aguilar. Jose Aguilar is a young man who will address this matter in court, and not in press.” Jose Aguilar was booked and released on a $15,000 bond while waiting for his arraignment. Also under the terms of his release, he was ordered to live with his mother, is not allowed to leave Southern California, and ordered to undergo counseling.
