Harmful Makeup Products

Staff Writer

Over the past few years, scientists have discovered chemicals, heavy metals, and bacteria turning up in everyday makeup products, skin creams, and hair styling products. One in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals which include: skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disruptors, and are carcinogenic. Carcinogenic products have been known to link directly to cancer just like Carbon Black, a dark pigment used in eye makeup.

Foundations, BB creams, primers, or tinted SPF creams, should be all natural, since the skin absorbs a lot of what is put onto it.  However, these products often include parabens, which has been linked to cancer, that can often lead to health issues. Parabens are widely used preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast in cosmetic products. Sounds good, right? Not so fast. They do more than that. Parabens also possess estrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors. They are mainly found in makeup products, body washes, deodorants, shampoos, and facial cleansers.

According to a recent piece by The New York Times, “Millions of women and girls apply lipstick every day. And not just once: some style-conscious users touch up their color more than 20 times a day.” A recent study also found that “a wide range of [lipstick] brands contain as many as eight other metals, from cadmium to aluminum.” Besides endocrine disruptors like propylparaben, other harmful substances in typical department store and drugstore lipsticks are tocopheryl acetate and retinyl acetate, which usually exists in nanoparticle form. Nanoparticles have been shown to cross the cell barrier and drive into organs, including the brain in humans, where they can cause long-term oxidative damage.
Millions of teenage girls wear makeup and use hair styling products on a daily basis. Year after year, manufactures produce new products in both makeup and hair products, yet not one of these teenager girls or their mothers take the time to see what their precious daughters are putting on their skin or using in their hair. Many women in their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s use skin creams to help with wrinkles, crows feet or just to help keep them looking young, yet most of those women don’t take the time to take notice of the ingredients of the creams they put on their skin.  With all the bad ingredients in women’s everyday products, every woman and girl should be aware and take precaution to what they are putting on their face and body.
