LGBTQ+ community was in outrage at Youtube new Restricted Mode. A lot of videos were block including LGBTQ+ videos about the youtuber coming out. Youtube restricted videos for vulgar language, disturbing images, sexual content, portray of harmful or dangerous activities. According to Youtube, “The intention of Restricted Mode is to filter out mature content for the tiny subset of users who want a more limited experience”. A Youtube spokesman told Daily News, “Videos that contain LGBTQ+ topics are available in Restricted Mode, however, some videos that cover subjects like health, politics and sexuality may not appear for users and institutions that choose to use this feature”. On Monday Youtube release a statement on their Youtube Creators twitter account. They talk about LGBTQ+ being, “a key part of what Youtube is all about”.
McSwiggan, an LGBTQ+ Youtuber, had his video about him coming out to his grandmother restrict. McSwiggan argues his video was suitable for any age. He added, “If anything, it would be extremely beneficial and helpful for children to see that — especially children who are struggling to deal with their identity; especially to LGBTQ+ kids.”. Youtube Creator twitter account on Monday afternoon apologize for the whole thing, “Sorry for all the confusion with Restricted Mode. Some videos have been incorrectly labeled and that’s not right. We’re on it! More to come”.
