The iHeartRadio music awards were full of surprises. The awards aired on March 5th and took place in Inglewood, California. Many performed including Ed Sheeran, Noah Cyrus, the Chainsmokers, Shawn Mendes, and Bruno Mars.
The awards included the innovator award, to Bruno Mars, and song of the year went to “Can’t Stop The Feeling” by Justin Timberlake. Female artist of the year went to Adele, who also won best album of the year for her album 25, and male artist of the year went to Justin Bieber. The producer of the year was given to Benny Blanco. Best new artist went to The Chainsmokers, who also won best new pop artist, and best duo/group went to Twenty One Pilots.
Twenty One Pilots also won alternative rock band of the year, alternative rock song of the year with their song “Heathens”, and alternative rock album of the year with their album Blurryface. Rock song of the year went to Green Day with “Bang Bang”, and rock artist of the year went to Disturbed. Best new rock/alternative rock artist went to The Strumbellas, and rock album of the year went to Metallica with Destruct.
Onto country, country song of the year went to “Somewhere On A Beach” by Dierks Bentley, and Thomas Rhett won country artist of the year. Kelsea Ballerini won best new country artist. Lastly, country album of the year went to Chris Stapleton with his album Traveller.
The awards continued with dance music awards. Dance artist of the year went to The Chainsmokers who also won dance album of the year with their album Collage.
The next category was Hip-Hop and R&B, where Drake won best hip-hop song of the year with “One Dance” and he also won hip-hop artist of the year. Best new hip-hop artist went to Chance The Rapper and R&B song of the year went to Rihanna with “Work”, Rihanna also won R&B album of the year with Anti. Lastly, The Weeknd won R&B artist of the year, and Bryson Tiller won best new R&B artist of the year.
Latin and Regional Mexican was up next. Latin song of the year went to “Duele El Corazon” by Enrique Iglesias, Latin artist of the year went to Nicky Jam, best new latin artist went to CNCO, and latin album went to J Balvin with Energia. Regional Mexican song of the year went to “Solo Con Verte” by Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizarraga. Regional Mexican artist of the year went to Calibre 50, and Regional Mexican album of the year went to Recuerden Mi Estilo by Los Plebes Del Rancho De Ariel Camacho. Finally, Joss Favela won best new Regional Mexican artist.
The last category of the night was the socially voted category. Best tour went to Coldplay with A Head Full of Dreams tour, best lyrics went to “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber, and best collaboration went to “Work” by Rihanna featuring Drake. Best cover song went to Fifth Harmony with “Ex’s and Oh’s”, who also won best music video with “Work From Home”, and best song from a movie went to 5 Seconds of Summer with “Girls Talk Boys”. Best underground alternative band went to Pierce The Veil, social star went to Jack and Jack, and best fan army went to Fifth Harmony. Lastly, best solo breakout went to Zayn.
The awards recognized many artists and will continue to grow and recognize more in the years to come.
