Eight Ball Craze

Now that iOS 10 is out, Apple users are going crazy over iMessage games. The most popular one is Eight Ball Pool. The game is in a set, along with 11 more (and growing) games, from the downloadable iMessage app, GamePigeon.

The game has 2 settings: normal and hard. The normal setting has white lines that help line up where the ball will go to help the player shoot with success. The hard setting does not have the lines, meaning there is no definitive way of seeing where the ball will go. Thus making the game harder. Eight Ball is mostly popular among teenagers, because of the game’s addictive and competitive features.

Many feel addicted to the game due to  the enjoyment of winning, and are playing it with all of their friends. It is a fun, competitive way to continue a conversation with someone. In addition, it throws in a friendly game. It also helps avoid awkward small talk and pauses. Overall, the game has a competitive edge, with fun and easy aspects mixed in that is drawing everyone into gameplay.

A Strange Review of Doctor Strange

by ADAM ESCOBEDO

Staff Writer

The story follows Dr. Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, a famous neurosurgeon who breaks his hands in a car accident. When Western medicine does not work, he tries Eastern medicine. He then learns about magic and becomes a sorcerer. The first part is him training and learning spells. After the first half, it gets into the magic world Marvel claims they will be going into. The world is amazing and opens a lot of doors for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The movie is about doing bad things for the greater good. It will be interesting for that ideology to enter the MCU. The only bad part is the first half where Strange is learning. This is what most people critique about the film. For me, it was not bad. There was some comedy, which is expected from Marvel. The story does feel a like bit like Iron Man. Both of these characters are cocky, constantly injure themselves, and cannot do what they claim they are good at; they fix what is broken in order to become a hero.

So my question is, will Doctor Strange become the Tony Stark of  Phase Four? The Phases, as Marvel calls them, is a group of movies that are telling a small story within the MCU. I do not know what will happen for Phase Four. It will be interesting to see what Marvel will do for Phase Four. Phase Three will end with Infinity War, the third Avenger movie that brings everyone in the MCU together. As Marvel told us, anything can change.

Doctor Strange, himself, is amazing; he is Tony Stark with magic. Benedict Cumberbatch does a great job as Doctor Strange. You see the character develop throughout the whole movie. On the other hand, the villain, Kaecilius, is not quite as special as the protagonist. Marvel is know for not making good villains. In my opinion, there has only been two great villains so far in the MCU – Loki and Zemo. This villain follows the same path as all the others. Kaecilius, played by Mads Mikkelsen, is only there to advance the plot. There is little character development for him. With that being said, I did enjoy him. Marvel could have tried to do better by adding a little bit of development for Kaecilius; however, if that was to happen, it would still not be enough to make him a great adversary.

Other characters that stood out to me were The Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton, and Mordo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. The Ancient One was a good character, and like Nick Fury, you do not know if you can trust her. Then there is Mordo. Mordo is a great character to go against Doctor Strange. He is a follow-it-by-the-book kind of guy. He trusts The Ancient One, and it is interesting to watch him lose that trust. Doctor Strange does not trust The Ancient One, and then he starts to understand her. Mordo trusts The Ancient One and loses that trust toward the end of the movie. It is cool how they portray this, and I am interested to see how they use Mordo in upcoming films.

The visuals were, what we all know was going to be, a great challenge. Marvel pulls it off, yet again. The visuals are amazing, and when Strange is going through dimensions, it is a stunning image. It highlights the amazing world we can expect to see Marvel travel to.

The music was composed by Michael Giacchino. He did a great job composing the music; it feels like a Marvel movie. There are no songs that stand out: They are your regular Marvel songs.

To wrap everything up, Doctor Strange is a fun, enjoyable movie. It is not the best Marvel movie, but it is also not the worst. It is slow in the beginning, but it picks up pace halfway through. The visuals are what stand out in the movie. It captures what Doctor Strange is know for. The villain is still a Marvel villain, and the characters are good in their own way. They bring a different perspective to Doctor Strange. There are two clips after credits, like every Marvel movie, so do not forget to stay and watch. Overall, Doctor Strange is an entertaining movie that is worth seeing.

Sleeping With Sirens Tour

swsBy EMILY DE MELLO

Sleeping With Sirens, a pop punk band, has recently began a tour that is only happening in America. The tour began in November and will end in December. They have already played at a few locations and the nearest one is down in Los Angeles at The Wiltern on November 27th, which is the venue my friend and I will be attending.

These concerts are normally hectic and are not anything like the seated concerts. Since these tickets are general admission, there will be no seats, meaning you will have to get there early to stand in the front. There is also plenty of crowd surfing, mosh pits, and jumping. While some of this stuff can be dangerous, it is still a lot of fun and a great experience.

Sleeping With Sirens has done a lot for their fans and are granting VIP tickets for some. They have also been very influential to their listeners, by telling them they are worth it and that they mean the world to them. Their concerts are always positive and are extremely entertaining to attend. I definitely recommend going to this band’s upcoming appearances while they are on tour.

Pierce The Veil : Misadventures Tour

By EMILY CARRILLO

On October 15th, I attended Pierce The Veil’s Misadventures tour featuring the bands, I Prevail and Neck Deep in Fresno. This show was sold out almost as soon as the tour dates were released and people did not hesitate to purchase VIP tickets as well. On the morning of the concert, there was already a line forming at the front of the Rainbow Ballroom Theater, which was the concert venue.

The cool thing about these sorts of concerts, is how loyal the fans are and how passionate everyone is about the music. No matter how different everyone is, on that day of the concert, everyone was there for the music and to have a good time. I was able to make more friends in the seven hour wait in line, and I got the privilege of seeing old friends of mine.

After the two opening bands finished their performances, Pierce The Veil ended the night with playing old songs from their previous records, and songs from their newest record titled Misadventures. They even performed a song from the previous record, Collide With The Sky, that touched the hearts of many fans called Hold On Till May. The band’s performance of the song had the crowd in tears over the meaningful lyrics that helped some fans through some tough times.

As soon as Pierce The Veil finished performing their last song of the night, the guitarist, Tony Perry, was throwing out his guitar pics. I was lucky enough to catch one. After buying some tour shirts and saying goodbye to the friends that I made in line, I waited outside of Pierce The Veil’s tour bus to see if one of the band members would come out and sure enough, Mike Fuentes, the drummer for Pierce The Veil, came outside to meet some fans, myself included. That night I made a promise with Mike to keep my head up. I will never forget the meaningful words he told me: ¨Always stay positive.¨

School Bullying

By SARAH SERRATO

Staff Writer

Bullying is a huge problem in our society today. Hillary Clinton took note of this situation and decided to try and take charge by launching a campaign called “Better than Bullying”. A lot of kids suffer the kicks from bullies and most of them start harmful habits that can sometimes lead to their deaths. With all of the racist and stereotypical comments Trump has been making towards Mexicans and Arabian people, adolescents now believe it is okay to state harmful sayings towards those races.

There are studies to show how often bullying occurs, “ In 2013, 1 in 5 teenagers reported being bullied at school” (Kamenetz “Four Myths About School Bullying”). Bullying doesn’t just involve verbal abuse, but also physical abuse. Many students have suffered serious injuries due to these circumstances. Back to Trump, teachers have started a study to see the aftermath of Trump’s speeches, “In the survey, titled “The Trump Effect”, teachers reported incidents of ethnically and racially motivated bullying by students connected with Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric” (Kamenetz “Four Myths About School Bullying”). Teachers have noticed the increase of racial comments towards others.

Cyberbullying also still occurs today and most students state they receive harmful messages, “In that same 2013 report, 7 percent of students said they had been targeted online with unwanted messages or invasions of privacy” (Kamenetz “Four Myths About School Bullying”). Clinton has created a goal to make the internet a “safer place”, but will that work? We can’t control what people say or do. It all depends on themselves and their morals.

New York Marathon

Sunday, November 6, 2016, marked another victory for Mary Keitany of Kenya and first-time victory for 20-year-old Eritrean, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie at the annual New York City Marathon.

This is now Mary Keitany’s third consecutive victory. Keitany is the first woman to win three in a row since Grete Waitz won five from 1982 to 1986. She ran more than half of the course entirely alone, pulling away from her rivals before the ten-mile mark and never needed to look back, finishing completely out of sight of the rest of the field in two hours twenty-four minutes and twenty-six seconds. Though she is the second-fastest woman in history, and her country’s record holder (2:18:37), Kenya decided to leave her off its Olympic team this year after she collided with Jemima Sumgong and fell in the London Marathon with about five miles to go and subsequently failed to win.

Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, who is the youngest race winner in history, pulled away from a tight pack of three at Mile twenty and blew victory kisses to his onlookers as he won in 2:07:51. He was followed by Lucas Rotich of Kenya in second, Abdi Abdirahman, a Somali-born American who is based in Arizona, finished in third, and Abdirahman, 39, who is almost a generation older than Ghebreslassie. Ghebreslassie, who won the world championship in Beijing in 2015 at age 19, finished in fourth place at the Rio Olympics this year. He is the first Eritrean citizen to win the New York City Marathon.

Search For CA Mom Continues

by KHALANI GARAY

Staff Writer

All that remains along a northern California jogging path is an iPhone, a pair of earbuds, and a few strands from what is believed to be the hair of 34 year old, Sherri Papini, a mother of two.

Sherri Palpini was described as an incredible human being and the best mom anyone has ever seen. Nearly a week ago on Wednesday, Sherri was last seen in the mid-to late-morning or early afternoon wearing a pink jogging top. Her husband Keith arrived home later that day and said it was unusually quiet.

“On normal days, I would open the door and my family comes, runs, and gives me a hug,” Keith told CNN affiliate KRCR-TV.

However, he soon realized his wife was not home. That included the couple’s two children, ages two and four.He said he then proceeded to call the children’s daycare and discovered they had not been picked up. It was not long before Keith Papini used an app to track his wife’s smart phone, learning it was down the street from their home, off Old Oregon Trail.

“That’s when I knew she had been taken or abducted, in my opinion,” Keith told the station.

Keith Papini then reported his wife missing. So far, authorities have received over a hundred tips, but they have no information or evidence to persuade nor dissuade that Sherri Palpini was abducted.

“If she is listening, I want to say, ‘We are trying. We are trying the best we can and I am sorry I’m not there,’” a weeping Keith Palpini told KRCR.

As for the children of the couple, Keith says they still do not know their mother has gone missing. The search will continue nonetheless. Everyone has hope Sherri Palpini will be found, alive and well.

The Reality TV Star Who Became President

The 2016 race to the White House that once involved twenty-two major candidates is officially over; Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by turning the table in battleground states across the country; states such as Florida and Ohio. Ultimately, it was Trump’s shocking victory in Wisconsin that put him over the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the presidency.

Clinton called him to concede shortly after, and minutes after she did, he and his family took to the stage at his victory rally in New York. Trump called for Americans to come together as one united people during his victory speech. Despite leading a campaign that discriminated against Muslims, Hispanics, and other minority groups, the president-elect pledged to be president for all Americans. Trump is scheduled to take office as the 45th President of the United States on January 20, 2017.

Man Fatally Shot by Police Officer

Fifty-year-old Walter Scott was fatally shot by police officer, Michael Slage,r on April 4, 2015, but the case is still going on today.

Scott was pulled over because of a broken taillight. Pierre Fulton, Scott’s close friend and passenger, testified that Scott obeyed Slager. However, when Slager went to check the driver license, Scott bolted. According to the Daily Sun, the events were caught by a bystander on their phone. Legal advisor Scarlett Wilson said that Slager fired eight times after he failed to subdue him with a stun gun. Michael Slager faces thirty years to life if convicted and faces federal charges for violation of Scott’s rights.

The recording of the incident did not cover the entire event, but it did capture Scott being stricken down from afar. This video was played to the jury in court. North Charleston Police Sergeant, Scott Hille, was asked if there was anything unprofessional in Slager’s actions shown in the video and Hille responded that there was not.

The reason he fled is unknown, but his family did mention that he most likely fled because he feared going back to jail for missing child support payments; however, this reason was shut down by prosecution due to speculation.
