A California deputy was killed after one of his colleagues unintentionally shot him in the chest. The tragedy occurred at around 3:40 p.m. Monday, at a Sheriff’s office near Fresno Yosemite International Airport, according to a statement released by Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims.
Deputy Rod Lucas, age 46, and his co-worker, who is a detective, were discussing their back-up weapons and how they carried them at the time of the incident. During the conversation, the detective had his weapon out and it discharged one round. According to the police report,the bullet flew, striking Lucas in the chest, very close to the heart.
Lucas was a twenty-year veteran at the Fresno Police Department and a nine-year veteran of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2008. He leaves behind a wife, four children and a grandchild.
