Opening the 2016-2017 NFL season was a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl. Playing in Denver, Colorado at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, the Denver Broncos hosted the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers were favored to win the game.
In the first quarter Cam Newton led Carolina down the field and connected with Kelvin Benjamin for a 14 yard touchdown pass. The first quarter ended with the Panthers leading 7-0.
The second quarter was filled with more action. The Broncos tied up the game with a 28 yard touchdown run from fullback Andy Janovich. Towards the end of the quarter Cam Newton put the Panthers up 14-7 with a 2 yard touchdown run. The Broncos were unable to score on their next position so they punted the ball back to Carolina. With 3 seconds left on clock, Panthers kicker Graham Gano made a 44 yard field goal to put the Panthers ahead of the Broncos 17-7 at halftime.
After halftime, the game resumed. The third quarter had no scoring from either team. The score remained 17-7. Denver opened up the fourth quarter with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Trevor Siemian to C.J. Anderson, Carolina’s lead shrunk. The score was now 17-14. The Broncos controlled the final quarter. C.J. Anderson scored again with a 1 yard touchdown run. For the first time in the game, Denver led the game with a 21-17 lead. The Panthers attempted to come back but ended up settling for a field goal which made the score 21-20. Neither team scored for the rest of the game, and the Broncos beat the Panthers again.
The Denver Broncos opened up the season with a surprising victory and look to have a promising season.
