Hanley and Red Sox use Rally to Win in 9th

The Red Sox have been atop the AL East for a good chunk of the year, but they have been experiencing some troubles to break away from the Orioles to get comfortable. Strife aside, the Red Sox have been on a big winning streak to give them a good three-game cushion between them and the Orioles. Going into the series with their long time rival, the Yankees, all eyes were on the Red Sox to see if they would be able to take care of business.

Every game in this series has been very close and has come down to the last out. All games  have been with the Yankees leading all game long, until the last three or four innings and the Red Sox look to flip the switch; then the big bats come out.

In game one of this four game series, Hanley had plans to ruin the Yankee’s night. All night pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was making the Red Sox batters look foolish. Swinging at pitches way out of the zone and in the dirt, and burning 99 MPH fastballs right over the plate, making batters swing and miss all night. These Red Sox batters were hoping for something to happen to Tanaka, or this was going to be a long night for them.

Coming the 8th inning, Tanaka was pulled out and the Yankees, with a 5-1 lead, thought they totally had this game sealed. However, the Red Sox had other ideas. David Ortiz blasted a home run deep to left center giving the best offense in the league a chance of hope. When a team can help it, they do not want to give the best offense in the league a chance of hope. Sadly for the Yankees, it was too late; they already did.

Going into the 9th, the Red Sox were ready to have some fun. To start the inning, they get runners on first and second, but end looms over the Sox with two outs. There is still hope resonating; Big Papa is up, and the crowd knows what he has in mind. He hits a single to centerfield to score Pedroia, and Bogaerts goes to second. Then, Betts singles to right to score Bogaerts and send Hernandez to third. With runners on first and third Hanley Ramirez steps up to the plate. With a record of 0-4 that night, he was really struggling at the plate. But with the crowd roaring and tons of energy flowing through the stadium spectators had a feeling something big was going to happen.

With a 3-1 count, Hanley gets a pitch over and away of the plate, right where he likes it, and hits a shot to deep center, and Fenway park goes insane. It was a night to remember for not only the Red Sox, but maybe the biggest hit for Hanley in his Red Sox career to put the Red Sox just that much closer to an AL East pennant.

Finding Dory: The Blue Tang Story

By SAVANNAH GARZA

The second installment of Disney and Pixar’s Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, was released in theatres on June 17, 2016.  Like most others, after viewing the trailer for the long-anticipated movie, I was eager to see it immediately. I used to live in Monterey, California, so the ocean life in the movie reminded me of when I was a kid and of the memories associated with living at the coast. Movies like Finding Nemo and Finding Dory are quite relatable to those who share the same experience of living by the ocean.

Finding Dory is a hilarious, yet slightly sorrowful film. The movie progresses slowly, then picks up in pace as the movie goes on. By the time the movie ended, I was in tears because it is centered around Dory’s story and how it feels for her to become a part of Marlin and Nemo’s family. Finding Dory is a great movie, but it does not live up to the high standards set by Finding Nemo.

The addition of new sea creatures, some examples being: a beluga whale, a whale shark, and a septopus, sets Finding Dory apart from Finding Nemo.  The viewers learn a few things about Dory’s past that were not answered in the first film. For instance, we find out where Dory is from and how she becomes lost as a child. Although Finding Dory falls short when compared to its predecessor, it is still a great movie to see.

Lights Out All Over The U.S.

Are you into horror movies? Do you enjoy being terrified? Can you handle the terror? If so the perfect movie for you will be “Lights Out”. This movie is an amazing thriller/horror movie that will make you sleep with the lights on for many days.

The movie starts off right away with showing Diana, the ghost and childhood best friend of Sophie, the mom. Diana  plans on staying forever at any costs. Diana haunted Rebecca, one of the main characters, when she was little and also had to deal with her mom’s illness. Rebecca was so overwhelmed and frightened that she ended up leaving her house, some say abandoning her mom.

Years have passed and her little brother, Martin, is now experiencing the same haunting as his older sister. Now it is up to them to help save their mom from this horrible illness and the haunting of Diana.

Throughout this movie, we go along, step by step, following the siblings and their struggle to end the terrifying ghost Diana. The movie was not as scary compared to other horror movies, but it will still give viewers a fright. This movie is perfect for people who have a fear of the dark or get uneasy with creepy looking subjects. This movie is rated PG-13, and it is directed towards teens or younger teens. “Lights Out” defines the saying “monster in the dark.” All in all, this movie is a great choice and definitely gives the watcher a good scare.

Celebrities Say Goodbye to Social Media

By EMILY DE MELLO

More and more celebrities are beginning to quit using social media sites. Some have addressed why and others have not tried to do so. Most have done it because they did not like social media’s negative effects, others because they needed a break.

Famous artists such as Demi Lovato, Iggy Azalea, and Justin Bieber have long since decided they were sick of social media and the negativity they receive from being themselves. Demi Lovato did come back to social media, claiming in a tweet, “I love my Lovatics too much to leave them”. Iggy Azalea, however, has given her management full control of all of her accounts and still has not shown any interest over controlling these accounts since 2015. Azalea seemed to stand strong with her decision in a tweet, claiming that “The Internet is the ugliest reflection of mankind there is”. Justin Bieber deactivated his Instagram in August because of the hate he and his new girlfriend received. He recently started up Instagram again to upload a picture, but then claimed on Twitter that it was an accident. Bieber’s and Azalea’s fans are hoping they’ll be back soon. The Lovatics are glad she didn’t go through with it.

Most celebrities, like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, quit social media and have claimed it was because they needed more time to focus on more important things. Swift took time off around her 1989 world tour in October of 2015. Although she didn’t deactivate her accounts, she did announce that “people might need a break” and began to post less and less. Sheeran took his break in December of 2015, directly explaining why. He stopped posting on his Instagram and Twitter after posting a picture on his Instagram stating he was “taking the opportunity of not having to be anywhere… to travel the world.” He has not posted anything since he gave us reason for his break.
Even though some of these celebrities don’t look like they will come back to social media, their careers have still continued on and have even grown since then. These celebrities were able to send a message to their fans about how social media affects people. Either way, these breaks were probably much needed in favor of these celebrities’ stressful lives.

No Homework, No Problem

Recently, a teacher from the Godley Independent School District has decided to “[try] something new” this school year and ban homework for her second grade class. Brandy Young, presented the parents of her second grade students with a note at “Meet the Parent Night” on Monday August 22, 2016, stating her plan for the upcoming school year.

“I am trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year” Young reveals in her note.

Following the release of the note, mother Samantha Gallagher shared the note with her fellow Facebook friends, declaring that her daughter, Brooke, “love[s] her new teacher already!”. The post has been shared a number of over 67,000 times.

“Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance,” Young states in her closing paragraph.

The National PTA and the National Education Association has recommended that the maximum amount of homework -all subjects combined- should be 10 minutes or less per grade level per night. With that being said, second grade students should have only have to do 20 minutes of homework per night.

However, Young believes that rather than spending the night focusing on homework, “I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success. Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside, and get your child to bed early.”

Young said that she ultimately made this decision based on her school district. “Our district, campus, and teaching teams are exactly the supportive environment you need if you’re going to break the mold and try something new,” Young said in an email. “We’re never really afraid to voice new opinions and ideas because our leadership is always so supportive, and our co-workers want what’s best for educating our students.” Young is thrilled with her changes and is curious to see what happens as the year progresses.

December 25,1996, a normal Christmas morning, JonBenet, a six year old girl, and her brother Burke awoke to bikes and gifts from Santa, and from their parents, John and Patsy Ramsey.  Little did they know of what they would find the next morning.

Patsy awoke the day after Christmas to get the children ready for their trip they were going to go on, but as she came down the stairs she found a ransom note stating that they wanted 18,000 dollars and if they did not receive it they would behead JonBenet. She then decided to call the police and accidently left the phone disconnected from the receiver, which would later play a key detail in the case. While this was occuring John was allegedly reading the note and Burke was still asleep in his room.  Once the police arrived they awaited for the kidnappers call, that would never come. John and a family friend searched through the house once more, but as they were going through the basement John found her body wrapped in a blanket, strangled and beaten.

Police automatically felt that John, Patsy, or Burke where the key suspects. There are interviews in which the neighbor recalled hearing a scream and some people conspire that Burke seemed unaffected, also some say that John never cried and he acted mysteriously. Patsy was the last person to see her, and the ransom note was written on a pad of paper she owned. Some conspirers say that Bill, a man the parents hired to act as Santa,  may have snuck in through the broken window and then raped and beat her in fear.

Twenty years after the mysterious murder,  of a six year old beauty queen, the question remains who done it?  The list of suspects arranges from “Santa”, Patsy, John, and her nine year old brother Burke.

Death of New Mexico Girl Stunned Neighbors

By JENNIE LAU

Many children had succumbed to abduction, abuse, and assault; but only a small voice to speak against it. New Mexico is known to have an excessive youth poverty rate across the nation as well as a state government that faced the dilemma of sheltering youth from mistreatment. Victoria Martens, a ten years old girl, falls victim to the abuse. Martens was discovered to have methamphetamine injected into her system before being raped by Fabian Gonzalez, a 31 years old man who was engaged to Victoria’s mother, Michelle Martens. Michelle Martens, Fabian Gonzalez, and his cousin Jessica Kelley, were justified to have been involved in the death of Victoria Martens. The three were charged with abduction, death, and corrupting the evidence of Victoria Martens. Victoria’s case is considered as one of the worst scenario of youth that were abused to death by being drugged, raped, and dismembered.
Cases piled upon one another of youths that yielded to mistreatment throughout the state of New Mexico which prompted investigations and programs to improve poverty and lessen the victims. New Mexico Governor, Susana Martinez took in consideration into changing the environment of New Mexico by enforcing child welfare caseworkers to make more home visits, and the nation to execute kindergarten programs to put a safer shield over the children. As Sanchez had stated, big change does not happen overnight; it takes effort and time, maybe generations, to fully lower the rate of youth poverty rate and abuse for the sake of future generations.

ITT Tech Schools Shut Down All Over The US

By KHALANI GARAY

Staff Writer
On the morning of September 6, 2016, thousands of students awoke to an email explaining how they would not be able to attend classes anymore. After many years of investigation, ITT Educational Services, the institutes parent company, announced all 130 campuses in 38 states would be shut down immediately. The institute’s closure comes after the U.S. Education Department’s decision to ban ITT from enrolling new students who use federal financial aid. It also affects nearly 35,000 students and around 8,000 employees. Because of this closure, many will never receive a diploma. Leon Wiggins II, a student at ITT Tech, was just closing in on his degree when he got the news. He explained that the school said they would allow attending students to finish. “Two quarters ago there were rumors about the school having problems, but they told us that anyone who was already a student would be allowed to finish,” he explained. “Am I angry?” he said. “I’m like angry times 10 million.” For the students who left the school in the last 120 days, they will be eligible to have their loans forgiven if they decide to attend another school. As for the students who were currently attending ITT, it is uncertain whether they will be able to have their loans forgiven if they were considering going to another college. It is also uncertain whether or not they will be able to pick up where they left off at a new college. Community colleges surrounding the institute are highly encouraged to be flexible with credit transfers as well as student transfers in these harsh times.
