On Friday, February 13, the El Diamante Girls’ Varsity Basketball team celebrated their Senior Night with a victory over  Hanford West. The final score was 51-35.  El Diamante was down by nine points at the first half but pulled through with a win in the third and fourth quarter.

The Miners were led by Danielle Aguirre and Deidra See; Aguirre scored a total of 17 points throughout the game, and See scored 14. The Miners played great defense, holding Hanford West down to nine points in the first quarter. Coach Isaac Castro felt the team played a great game. “We played excellent defense and did really well with converting our transition points. Everyone was focused on playing team ball, and we received the results of togetherness.”

The team was able to celebrate Senior Night with a well-earned win; Natalie Ballesteros, Danielle Aguirre, Xandria DelReal, Madison Aldaco, Alyssa Reynaga, Deidra See, Adrianna Esparza, Victoria Fortin, and Jocelyn Berrocales were all honored for their hard work on the team as seniors. Guard Adrianna Esparza commented that, “It was a memorable night with friends and family. Not only tears of sadness for the end of my season, but also tears of joy to have spent the season with the lovely ladies.”

Senior Madison Aldaco also shared her thoughts on the season overall and Senior Night. “This season, we had 10 seniors on varsity, that’s more than I’ve ever heard of. Senior Night was the best way to honor all of them. Our parents, coaches, family, and school really came together to support us and make it really special. All the seniors have been playing basketball for 4 years, and it was a great way to say goodbye and show us that we are important and going to be missed.”

On Wednesday, February 18, El Diamante played the Golden West Trailblazers at Golden West. The Lady Miners lost 63-39 and ended their season with an overall record of 9-15. Though the season may be over, the EDHS Girls’ Varsity Basketball team had a great run and will continue to work hard when the next season arrives.
