This picture was taken courtesy of my GW friend, Breauna Harris.

Two weeks ago, our Miner swimmers competed against the Pioneers and came out with the victory! Mt. Whitney, however, has some technical issues and couldn’t provide exact scores for us, but we know that the Miners came out on top.

Last week, our swimmers competed against our rivals, the Blazers, at Golden West’s pool. Here are the scores:

  • JV Boys- 74 vs. GW’s 92

  • JV Girls- 52 vs. GW’s 134

  • Varsity Boys- 109 vs. GW’s 63

  • Varsity Girls- 61 vs. GW’s 125

It may not have been the best meet ever score-wise, but individually, many swimmers received their personal best times! It was a fun meet!

Next week, WYL begins on Thursday and ends on Friday! It will occur at Mt. Whitney High School’s pool and it will be amazing. Try to attend and cheer on your friends!

Teacher Appreciation Week!

N- Teacher Appreciation Week, Lina Vangby LINA VANG

Assistant Editor

About five days a  week, many of us get the advantage of seeing our fellow El Diamante teachers. These teachers love what they do and some, have been teaching long before we were even born. There is no denying they work just as hard as students do, thus Teacher Appreciation Week came to be about.

Typically, Teacher Appreciation Week takes place the first week of May and the Tuesday of that week, it is always National Teacher Day; this year, Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th- 10th. During this week students will often show appreciation of their teachers with gifts and The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day as, “a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.”

Although it is not quite clear how Teacher Appreciation Week came to be, it is said that around 1944, Arkansas teacher Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with political and education leaders about the need for a national day to honor teachers. Woodridge then wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt, who in 1953 persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. The NEA, along with its Kansas and Indiana state affiliates lobbied Congress to create a national day to celebrate teachers. Congress, thus declared March 7, 1980 as National Teacher Day for that year only. The NEA and its affiliates continued to observe National Teacher Day in March until 1985, until its shift of date when the NEA Representative Assembly voted to change the event to Tuesday of the first full week of May, however.

Emily Mendez, a junior, recalls  her 5th grade year when her and as well as her classmates , they all brought and made gifts for their teacher. She says, “I really enjoyed it. Our teacher was shown how much gratitude we all had for him and today most high school students probably are not even aware there is a week for appreciating teachers or they probably have forgotten.”  Likewise, this shows how students don’t fully know that the first week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week!

Furthermore, there are countless ways a student can show appreciation for a teacher they are fond of. Here on campus, El D has some of the most prominent and excellent teachers, who are major components to El Diamante students’ education. Teacher Appreciation Week is a student’s opportunity to show their appreciation to teachers for all the effort they put in each day and the education that we receive thanks to them, and to acknowledge the crucial role teachers play in making sure every student receives a quality education.

Modern Tattoos

by MELISSA VANG

Staff Writer

O-Tattoos-Melissa VangTattoos have become a fashion statement in the 21st century. Around the 1970’s tattoos were patriotic, territory claims, and statements.  Scientists believe that tattoos have been a custom from 2000 B.C. The word tattoo is also derived from the Tahitian word tattau, which means “to mark.” also meant Nowadays, it has become a staple in fashion for many youths of modern time. Now, tattoos have become more of an art or a way of expressing oneself.

Teenagers see tattoos as a cool thing to get on their bodies. Tattoos have been promoted as a fashion statement through social media websites like Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram. Since Tumblr and instagram usually focuses on visual images there are over billions of images. Many pictures involve fashion, art, geography, and many more artistic images. Some pictures are of tattoos. The images of tattoos on these social media websites can inspire youngsters or make them feel like it would be cool to have them.

The social media plays a role on how we view tattoos nowadays. It is an open door to many possibilities that show us how tattoos have become a huge hit for young adults and teenagers alike. There are even teenagers in high school that have tattoos, and even though it is not a large amount it is still eye catching. Seeing our peers, idols, and society as a whole influences teenagers and young adults to get tattoos or want tattoos.

In some cases, students do not foreshadow the consequences or regrets of tattoos that they want to get.  Joe Cochrum, a 27 year-old, has a tattoo of a marijuana leaf on his right calf. It covers his whole back calf and is easily noticeable. “Yeah, I don’t know why I even got that tattoo… Well yeah I actually do, I was young and naive.” Tattoos are permanent and yes you can get them removed, but some people do not have the time or money for it even if they say they will do it. Cochrum continues with saying, “I mean, I don’t even notice it anymore since it’s been about 10 years but I kind of wish I never got it.” Even though Cochrum wished he did not get it when he was a teenager he just can not bring himself to get it removed. Tattoos that are removed still leave a blotch of the previous tattoo, they do not just leave your skin spotless.

To be honest, I have always wanted a tattoo but in reality I do not think I will get one anytime soon. People I know that have tattoos like it, some of them do not because it just does not fit them anymore. If I ever get a tattoo it will be of a quote, or something else inspiring. I feel like the fear of having it on my body forever wins over having it as something artistic on my body. Tattoos are a no go for me, but I do not mind it on others. When people decide to get tattoos it is their choice whether they want to get a small one, a whole sleeve of tattoos, or their whole back covered in black or colored ink. Furthermore, when young adults or teens get tattoos, most of their choices are inferred by that point of time at that age. As they get older, they come to realize that the tattoos they have gotten in their younger years do not represent who they are now as an adult. Tattoos are made by choice and some choices are permanent.

Things you can for Mother’s Day

by ANN VANG

Staff Writer

F- Good Mother's Day gifts, avangIf you are tired of buying your mother flowers or chocolate or candles for Mother’s Day, then perhaps it is time to start doing something different! Here are a couple of things you can do this year that might make her happier than all those typical motherly gifts that all mothers receive!

  1. Make her a card- Don’t buy one, make one! A mother would want to hear what her child has to say not something someone else wrote.

  2. Make her a scrapbook- Place all the photos you have of her and yourself. This way, when you are off to college, she will have a little something to remind her of you.

  3. Customize a shirt- Design a shirt that says something creative about her and wear it around letting everyone know how much you appreciate her.

  4. Design a necklace yourself- She loves jewelry, so be creative and coordinate something that has special meaning to the both of you!

  5. Bake some cupcakes- Show her just how sweet you can really be!

  6. Make her breakfast- Show her your cooking skills, and let her day begin off at a great start!

  7. Make dinner for the family- Don’t just give her the morning off, give her the night off as well, and cook dinner for the whole family!

  8. Do her chores- Learn how much your mother really loves you! Besides, she could use a relaxing day.

  9. Spend the day with her- If anything, all a mother really wants is to know that her children appreciate her, so don’t go out, reserve the day for the person who brought you into the world!

Being a mother is harder than you think, and truthfully a mother’s love is unrepayable, but who says we can’t try anyway? Instead of purchasing her flowers that will die in a couple days or chocolate that will only make her gain weight or candles that she already has plenty around the house, do something different this year. Let your deeds and effort express your feelings and appreciation, not gifts that will probably lose meaning in a couple of days.

Angelo’s Amazing Album Reviews Part Deux: Finally Rich

by ANGELO ASUNCION

Staff Writer

Finally Rich is Chief Keef’s major-label debut album that truly brings something new and different in the hip-hop scene. A much more aggressively arranged and  a completely unique vibe than the hip-hop songs produced today. The album still retains the essence of his older work. His album shows a deeply creative artist who has truly discovered how to be a marvelous songsmith. Finally Rich uses a different style such as the use of snare and the lyric choice to truly make his album different.

Chief Keef’s music establishes a simple sound that proved to be powerful effective and addictive, garnering millions of views on YouTube. He also shows that how original songs do not need the help of producers and PR(public relations) people, just avid listeners. Young Chop, Chief Keef’s producer, creates crisp snares and hi-hats that are similar to Lex Luger’s ,while Keef raps through the processing.

Nothing can be added to his sound that could substantially improve it. Famous rapper Kanye West found that out the hard way when his Michigan Avenue makeover of “I Don’t Like” was heavily criticized by Young Chop the day right after it hit the web. Finally Rich does have some implementation from some professional tweaks in the mix, but otherwise  most of Keef’s sound is left untouched. And in addition to succeeding on its own terms, it proves that Keef has a lot of potential– much more than his detractors might have hoped.

Based on a simple four-note earworm, the hook on album opener “Love Sosa” has the feel of something sung under the breath, and after hearing it once or twice, you’ll probably find yourself doing just that.

Many of Keef’s song’s carry a unique style. “Hallelujah”, also produced by Young Chop, is one the album’s more involved productions. Its blaring horns are similar to some of Waka Flocka’s songs , yet is a lot more heavier and different. . “Diamonds” has a similar feel, with gunfire, horn and string stabs, and a unique synth line all that plays evenly.

“Love Sosa”, is the album’s magnum opus. It is the catchiest single and perhaps the most hardcore focused song Keef’s ever made. It features an extremely catchy yet almost impossible to understand set of lyrics. Out of the handful.  “I Don’t Like”, Keef’s internet hit, lists many of the things he doesn’t like: snitches, fake shoes, sneak dissers( people who talk smack behind his back), and a myriad of other annoyances.  Featuring ,yet again, Chop’s mix of chimes, rattles, string stabs and menace, the track is virally catchy.

Even with high school unfinished, Chief Keef has already advancing hip hop in a new direction. His original way of rap, unique to everyone else, has captured millions of people’s ears. As a kid from the poor neighborhoods of Chicago, Chief Keef’s rise in popularity has made the young rapper Finally Rich.

First Timers Guide to Disneyland

by CHRIS TERCERO and MIRIAM SANDERS

Promotions Editor and Photography Editor

F- First timers guide to Disneyland-Chris&MiriamDisneyland is the happiest place on Earth, but wait, you have yet to experience this one-of-a-kind joy for yourself. You are wondering how in the world you haven’t been to Disneyland yet, and you feel as if you have missed out. There are some necessary things to know before you step into Disneyland, though. After reading this first timers guide to Disneyland, you are sure to have the best time at the happiest place on Earth.

1. Plan your trip in advance. Start planning your trip out at least one month in advance. You need to book your hotel room, plan for transportation, and plan for crowd expectancy. You can look up hotels near Disneyland. The most popular being the Grand Californian, the Disneyland Hotel, and the Paradise Pier Hotel. All three resorts are on Disney property so you won’t need to walk far to get the park. If you are planning on staying off Disney property make sure that the hotel offers transportation to the park so you won’t have to walk. When you are planning your stay make sure to research when Disneyland crowds are the lightest. This will ensure that you can get on as many rides as possible and meet with all your favorite characters.

2. Photobomb other people’s pictures. There will be people taking pictures everywhere. If you show up in some of the pictures and act like you are with them, they will later look at the photos and laugh like no tomorrow. They might be upset because there is a random person in their picture, but it won’t be the end of the world. Chances are, you will make their day with your hilarious photobomb.

3. Bring an experienced friend. If you have never been to Disneyland, chances are you are going to be very lost and confused on what to do. Disneyland will be so overwhelming and foreign to someone has never been there. If you have someone who has been there many times, then you will not be lost. They can guide you to the most fun places in Disneyland.

4. Get fastpasses right when you arrive. When you arrive at Disneyland or California Adventures, go straight to the most popular ride to get a fastpass. In Disneyland the rides to get them for are as follows: Space Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, and Star Tours. If you are going to California Adventures first then get a fastpass for the rides as follows: Radiator Springs Racers, Tower of Terror, Soarin’ Over California, California Screamin’, and Grizzly River Run. Getting fastpasses is essential to make riding all the rides possible. Once you can get another fastpass, get one!

5. Fit in as many rides as possible. Disneyland has a lot of rides to ride, so you should ride as many possible! If you are unable to ride the rides, take pictures of the rides. If you are scared of rollercoasters, ride the kiddy rides. There is a ride for everyone here. If the rollercoaster or ride isn’t enough fun, vlog while you ride the rides. Then later you can watch your experience on the ride and laugh at how silly you look.

6. Have a lot of patience for long lines. There may be long lines for the rides, so you must have patience to wait. While you are waiting, make a video of you waiting with your friends. Take pictures of the people waiting. You can play games or count the seconds while you wait. Always, always be patient while you are in line.

7. Places to eat. When you get hungry there are many places to go eat at the park. If you are wanting to eat at a character dining location or a very busy restaurant, you should make a reservation. If you just want to eat somewhere there are places to eat in almost every land. Each restaurant has different foods so if you want something specific you can always ask a cast member where you can go to get the food you want.

8. Meet with characters. The characters are the best part of Disneyland. If you are scared of rollercoasters, then you can just go around taking pictures with the characters. There might be some long times for the characters, but it will definitely be worth it because you have a photo to remember your experience in Disneyland. Later on, you can make a scrapbook of the first time you were in Disneyland so you can remember it for the rest of your life.

9. Look for hidden mickeys. When on rides and while walking through the parks, keep your eyes open for some hidden mickeys. Hidden mickeys are all over the parks, rides, and restaurants. They are three circles that resemble a mickey head. They a very fun to try to find when waiting in lines or sitting and eating. There is a book that they have that tells you where some of the hidden mickeys are. They are very fun to find and you can point them out to your party so that they can join in to.

10. Go shopping. Disneyland has so many collectables and nice souvenirs for everyone. They have pretty much everything you can want from a theme park’s store. When shopping, do some looking around but wait to do all of your shopping until the end of the day so you don’t have to carry it around all day. It’s hard to carry bags of stuff with you throughout the day and finding space for the stuff on rides is difficult. Unless you are just going to the Mad Hatter’s store to buy a hat or a character signing book, wait until the end of the day.

Are you ready to go to the happiest place on Earth now? Disneyland is calling you, so answer proudly by having the best time at Disneyland for the first time ever. Once you go to Disneyland, you will want to go every weekend. You will constantly want to be on the rides and with the characters. It is time to visit the happiest place on Earth, Miners!

High Fructose Corn Syrup: The John Tucker of Artificial Sugars

by AMANDA CRANSTON

Features Editor

There is surely high fructose corn syrup in this mutant gummy worm.

There is surely high fructose corn syrup in this mutant gummy worm.

In the 1970s, Earl Butz was appointed to the station of Secretary of Agriculture by the president of the time, Richard Nixon. Mr. Butz changed the policies of that time, and all the times before dating to America’s Great Depression, to the policies which now rule the current time. The government then began to subsidize the growing of major crops such as corn. From this came the common commodity which the average American consumes daily, high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is a cheaper substitute for sugar, and is found in millions of products, among them various forms of food.

Teenagers are extremely large consumers of soda. Those who have tried the throwback option often find it superior to the regular kind. Throwback sodas use real, granulated sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup which is used in the current sodas. High fructose corn syrup is more reliable chemically for the makeup of sodas, and is also cheaper, and less fluctuating price wise than sugar. High fructose corn syrup, therefore, is a concern for teenagers, for each and every person should be aware of what they are putting into their bodies.

High fructose corn syrup’s name may seem a bit long to the unfamiliar ear. It was originally given its “high fructose” prefix to differentiate it from regular corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is truly only corn syrup with additional enzymes to change glucose to fructose, and then purified further and various other scientific things done.

The mass production of this product is appalling. Soda was mentioned earlier, but this sugar substitute can be found in sweets of all kinds, as well as some types of breads and various other snacks and foods. It was originally developed, though not for mass production, in 1957. Since then, it has taken the world and its diets by storm. There is no correlation found so far necessarily between the rise in obesity and the spread of high fructose corn syrup and its escalated use. The studies are often done by beneficiaries of the corn companies, however, so the truth is not crystal clear. One truth that is crystal clear though is that teens must learn what is in their bodies and what they have put there. High fructose corn syrup is just another component of a vastly varying food system, and not nearly the most frightening.

Why you should make a time capsule

by SAVANNA CLEVENGER
Staff Writer

F-Time capsuleThe school year is finally coming to a close, and while many of us are more than ready for sleeping in and homework free nights, it’s always hard to say goodbye to friends going away and even harder to leave behind a year full of memories. High school can present some of the greatest and most difficult days, but one thing’s for sure: they’re memories you will never forget.

This year, all students are encouraged to make a time capsule, either alone or with their friends, to keep this past years high school memories alive no matter what the future may hold. Time capsules are fairly simple, you fill a box or some sort of container with things that were important to you this year, then you either bury the capsule or hide it away with a date on it for when you intend to reopen it. The longer you can wait, the better. Try planning to open the capsule five years from now, (ten if you can remember,) and you’ll be surprised at what you may have forgotten, or what you might remember!

Here are a few fun ideas of things to add to your capsule:

1. A current picture of you and all of your closest friends. In five years, there’s no telling how much your style or your inner circle will change. Chances are, you’ll be rolling with a whole new crew of friends and you’ll probably be sporting a brand new hair style in 2018.

2. Burn a mixtape of your favorite songs. If there’s one thing that’s constantly changing, it’s music. You may look back and laugh at some of your current jams, but listening to the playlist is sure to bring back a lot of memories.

3. Write a letter to yourself. Mention your current hobbies, happinesses, struggles, goals, hopes, plans, and even what you envision life to be like in 2018. Spare no details, talk about your favorite places to go to lunch and how excited/upset you are about your favorite sports team’s status this year. Put everything and everyone you love in the letter.

4. Something only you would understand. Maybe it’s a necklace from your ex boyfriend, or the seashell you found on the last beach trip you took. Pick something personal and meaningful that will be sure to spark memories.

5. Movie ticket stubs (or any other cool tickets or receipts). If you’ve recently gone to the movies, Magic Mountain, Disneyland, or even just to some fun restaurant with your friends, include the ticket stubs in your capsule to remind yourself in five years of all of the fun you had in 2013.

Feel free to add anything else that you think would be fun or is important to you, the capsule is supposed to be a reflection of your life this year, so add in whatever you want! (Of course, don’t throw in anything you can’t bare to part with for five years.) Get your friends to add into the capsule with you, it’s a fun way to keep connected and gives you an excuse to meet up again down the road. And making the capsule is half the fun!

Backstreet’s back, alright!

BY KATIE HUT-CHIN-SON

Staff Writer

F-Backstreet's back, alright!-Katie HutchinsonThat’s right Backstreet boys are back, well not technically. They found themselves landing a star on Hollywood’s walk of fame April 22nd of this year, in celebration of their twentieth anniversary. Nick Carter, Howie D, Brian Littrelll, A.J. McLean, and Kevin Richardson under the management of Lou Pearlman formed twenty years ago in 1993. Here’s a little background of the members and their individuality. Nick being know as the “cute” one was commonly compared to Justin Timberlake. Howie D however, the complete opposite of Nick is known as the “ugly” one, he was often compared to Lance from Nsync. Brian is known to be the “funny” one and also made his faith well known. A.J. McLean projects himself as a “bad boy” and seemed to be the most real or original member of the band. Finally, Kevin is well known for his style, he is always ready to pull off whatever attire that was presented in front of him.

The boy band was created after the initial success of New Kids. Pearlman felt he could take five male teenage singers and have the same outcome in Orlando, Florida, thus the group was formed after a drawn out application process. The name came with the infamous teen hangout called Backstreet, it was a flea market that was highly liked by young adults.

Although the band was created in the early 1990’s they did not rise to fame until three years later with the release of their first international album, Backstreet Boys. Since then they have release familiarized albums; Backstreet’s Back (1997), Millennium (1999) and Black & Blue (2000) until they departed. In 2005, the boys regrouped and came out with Never Gone where they shortly let Richardson go. The four guys debuted two albums with the absence of the once member Kevin Richardson, Unbreakable (2007) and This is Us (2009).

In 2012 around this time there was an announcement made that Kevin had rejoined the group, permanently. They found their inspiration from Boyz || Men and Color Me Badd which led them into becoming a famous pop group themselves. Their claim to fame album was “Quit Playing Games(With My Heart)”. The boys have sold over 130 million records worldwide and will live down the label as the best-selling boy band of all time. This obviously makes them very deserving of the recently received star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. They have also receiving ALMA, American Music, Billboard Music, Blockbuster Entertainment, BMI Pop, Grammy, Juno, MTV Asia, MTV Europe Music, MTV Video Music, MuchMusic Video, Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice, NRJ Radio, People’s choice, Radio Music, Smash Hits, Teen Choice awards, VIVA Comet, and World Music Awards during the span of their career. Although teens and children of our generation listened to them in the past and we are now on the path into becoming adults, we will forever remember them come their 30th or even 50th anniversary. Those twenty years have well paid off.
