Make over your body in 3 weeks.  Instead of a grueling total-body sweat session, build the workout you need with a few targeted moves that are fun and fast! The secret is cardio, if you follow this simple schedule I have put together to help tome your entire body— quick. Don’t forget to stay dehydrated by drinking plenty of water every day.

Lunge Jump (shape your legs)- A) Step into lunge position: keep front foot flat, back foot on its toes, and legs at 90 degree angels. B) Push off front foot and jump straight up, landing with legs together. Lunge with other leg; repeat. Do 2 sets of 12 reps. Tip: Add a toe raise after you land each time to really tone your lower legs!

Single Leg Drop (firm your abs)- A) Lie on your back with your arms resting at your sides and both legs in the air forming a “tabletop.” (Keep your knees together and directly above your hips.) B) Slowly straighten one leg, extending and lowering it to about 2 inches off the floor. Slowly return to start, then repeat with your other leg. That’s 1 rep: do 3 sets of 15. Tip: For even better results, lift your shoulders off the floor and look at your thighs the whole time!

Backside Rocker (tighten your butt and thighs)- A) With your heels elevated on a book, crouch down and grab the back of your ankles. B) Keep hands on ankles as you straighten legs and raise butt in the air. Quickly return to start. Do 3 sets of 20. Tip: Your chest should be touching your thighs when crouching down.

Twist Press (define your shoulders)- A) Hold weights (5Ibs) at chin level, just outside your shoulders, with palms facing in. B) Straighten arms overhead as you twist to the left. Return to start. Repeat to right side. Do 3 sets of 20. Tip: be sure feet stay put as you twist at the waist!

Sadies: Tips to remember for next year

by RYAN SEYMOUR
Staff Writer

Sadies is the one dance all year that breaks the tradition of guy ask girl.  It’s a unique dance that allows for a great range of creativeness to shine through. You’ll see a lot of extravagant and wild ideas in the coming years if you’re an underclassmen, and if you’re worrying about how you’ll ask when your time comes, don’t freak out. You don’t have to go out of your way to do something special. I’ll give a couple ideas for simple ways to ask.

Coming from a personal standpoint as a guy, I’d prefer to be asked in a more private manner and not in-front of the entire school, but that’s just me. As over-done as it may be, asking your potential date via a note with maybe a simple poem on it. It’s a really easy way to ask someone and it’s always sweet.

This one is my personal favorite. Ask him using food or candy. Find out what his favorite candy or meal is and prepare it for him. If you want to be creative and ask him in the food, by all means, go for it. If you’re not much of a chef, try using a pre-made cake, maybe from Costco.  I, for one, would love to be asked with food.

Here’s another classic. This one, however is a little more public than the last two. Show off your artistic skills and draw him a poster asking him to the dance and hang it in their classroom. You’ll have to double check what class they have and make sure that it’s okay with the teacher for you to do this. Maybe talk to the teacher you’ll have next and ask them if you can be a little late so you can stay behind and make sure they say, “Yes”. This way is pretty cute, especially if you’re artistic and can make it work.

The last one, involves a little work. Burn a CD with a couple of their favorite songs and at the end, put the song “Sadie Hawkins Dance” by Reliant K, then add a personal message to asking him to the dance. You don’t have to go big with this. Simple sometimes can be best.

Theatre vs. Renting

by TAYLOR SINGLETON
Staff Writer

With so many options for watching movies out there, many people debate whether or not to head to the theaters to watch the latest flick or wait and rent it to watch at home. While watching movies in the theater can be a fun experience, watching movies in the comfort of your home trumps the theater experience.
The prices at the movie theaters are through the roof. At theaters, matinee showtime tickets are, on average, $7.50 and popcorn can be anywhere from $7 – $12. Also, if you want candy, hot dogs nachos, or other snacks, those prices are ridiculously high as well. On the other hand, you can rent a movie from RedBox for $1,  buy microwave popcorn at the grocery store for $3 and buy a box of candy from WalGreens for $1.
Movie theaters can be messy and gross, with popcorn scattered everywhere. you can encounter lots of distractions: crying babies, loud talkers, seat-kicking kids. But, when you watch a movie at home, you can be assured that your movie-watching experience will be comfortable and distraction-free.
Watching movies at home allows you to basically do whatever you want. When watching a movie at home, you don’t have to worry about following the movie theater’s rules about texting, talking, and smuggling in snacks. You can talk as loud as you want, use your phone and eat whatever snacks you want without disturbing other moviegoers. Watching a movie at home gives you freedom from the restrictions of a movie theater.
Although you have a wait a couple of months to rent a movie after it leaves the theaters, it is worth the wait to be able to watch in your own home, without distractions, and with the freedom to do what you want. Some options for renting movies include Netflix, Blockbuster or the ever-popular RedBox. If you are looking for a fun, relaxing movie night, then why not head to SaveMart, rent a movie from RedBox, buy some snacks, and enjoy a movie in the comfort of your own home?

Benefits of reading

by JULIA VALDEPENA
Staff Writer

Reading has been a favorite past time for many centuries and there is no reason why that should end now. Some kids proclaim that reading is “rubbish” and “stupid”.  So to persuade these  people to get into the reading spirit, here are some benefits to picking up a  book and diving into the world of words.

First, books give you an escape into another world. If you are feeling stressed out from all the pressures of school or your family, you can always pick up a good book and let your troubles melt away. Get lost into the main character’s world and their problems. Reading is a good way to take your mind off of stressful situations. All you have to do is find that book that you just love and a comfy, quiet place to enjoy it.

If you read a variety of books it will help you become more cultured. You will be able to understand some of the references in movies and t.v. shows and actually understand the jokes. How many times have you sat there watching something and they reference to a book you have no idea about? All your friends get it, but you are the only one that doesn’t  If you read the classics and modern books there will be no more of those embarrassing situations.

Books are a great conversation starter. If you are hoping to make a new friend, you can ask them if they’ve read one of your favorites. Chance are they have and you could kick off a conversation on that book leading into a beautiful friendship. You can now avoid those awkward conversation starters on the weather and enter right into those animated conversations on books.

Reading improves your diction. Reading a variety of books gives you a better understanding words and widens your vocabulary. You can actually use those fancy words in the right context. This would be a bonus in job or scholarship interviews, you can sound like an educated person and really impress the employers. This would give you a huge advantage against the people you are going up against. Improving your vocabulary would also help on the English portion of the S.A.T. Most of the words on there are difficult to understand, but if you have read the books, you have read all those words.

Still not completely swayed into picking up The Hunger Games or Grapes of Wrath? Here is what your fellow Miners say on why they enjoy reading.

“I like reading because with reading, and a little imagination, you can make their world your world, and with a good book in hand, can be addicting.” -Ryan Rendahl

“I enjoy reading because it helps me relieve stress and because a good book always makes me happy.” -Rachel Pemelton

“I enjoy reading because it takes me into a whole other world. Since I like fictional/fantasy books, it’s like I’m living in my imagination. One of my favorite books is Harry Potter. When I read these books I picture myself as a wizard making potions, performing spells, playing wizard’s chess, or playing quidditch.”-Brandon Sung

There you have it! So whether you are into science, fantasy, action, romance, politics, or history. There is a book out there for you. All you have to do is look.

Kony 2012

by ALYSSA PENA
Staff Writer

No longer can it be a question, the invisible children have been recognized. The topic “KONY 2012” hit the web this past week hard, rising from 0 to 72,000,000 views on YouTube, the number one trending topic on Twitter, and the news of everyone’s Facebook feed. The organization, “The Invisible Children” set a goal to allow the world to finally know after about 25 years of Kony’s presence in terrible war crimes. After watching this video, most people take this call to action deeply, simply feeling good for even watching it. At the beginning of the week, it seemed everybody was on board, sharing it as much as possible, many buying their “action kits” the organization sold. But as the week continued, people began to build skepticism. The Invisible Children organization has a rumor for bad reputation behind it, but should we believe it? Here is an unbiased overview of possibly the largest topic of the year, KONY 2012.
So let’s start off by introducing Kony himself. For one, his name isn’t Kony; it’s Joseph Kony. So, what is Joseph’s purpose? That’s where most people are confused. Back in the late ‘80s, Kony began preaching to his fellow people as if he was receiving messages from god, claiming they must gain political control. He got this scheme from a woman named Alice Lakwena, who essentially did the same thing. After gaining a good reputation, he began the Lord’s Resistance Army. Kony and Lakwena together raided cities, in attempt to take over government rule. They were successful, until Lakwena was defeated and fled. At this point, Kony took over her army, and grew much more powerful. In the 2000’s, this is where his crimes began to escalate. He was already under warrant for arrest by the ICC (International Criminal Court), but began killing groups of people in horrifying and disgusting ways. He began abducting children for his army, knowing they were easier to manipulate and control. The false accusation is that nobody tried to stop him. They have, and failed. He is not inexperienced, and he’s set himself up well.
What exactly does The Invisible Children want you to do to help? They’ve asked for donations, yes, but their main goal? To make Joesph Kony famous. Not famous as in celebrity famous, more like infamous. They want his name out there so much that everyone will recognize his face and know exactly who he is, what he has done, and as a reminder that he needs to be stopped. They want him stopped and captured this year, 2012, because they believe what he has been doing has been going on for too long. The year “2012” also has a meaning within itself. The 20 represents the 20 celebrities they want to reach out to to help represent KONY 2012, to make Kony even more famous, including celebrities like Rihanna, Taylor Swift, even Oprah. The 12 represents the 12 high policy makers who are targeted by KONY 2012 to help keep it open to government interest, like George. W. Bush and Mitt Romney. They also talk about the date everyone is now excited for, April 20, which marks the Cover The Night event. Cover The Night is their plan for supporters of KONY 2012 to cover cities all over the world with posters calling for the fall of Kony, in hopes that this cause will not be ignored.
So here we are now. This organization, The Invisible Children, have made a video exposing Joseph Kony to practically the entire world. They have asked us to donate to them to help the cause. But, skepticism has been built around them. Like any charity, not all the money goes towards the organization, but just how small of a portion is making it there is the real question. Although the KONY 2012 film was a hit, this is not their first film. They have been recording, producing, traveling to Africa, traveling the world speaking about what is going on in Africa, and all of this is being funded by your donations. Granted, all of this is clearly successful, rallying this many people for the cause. But they have been previously accused, truly or falsely, of keeping a little more money than they should, making it on the contrary a quite large profitable organization. I can’t personally tell you if this is true, because I don’t know. It’s your money and, although there are other organizations helping the same cause, it’s your choice if you believe they deserve the money for calling the attention to this issue or not.

Whether you believe people should support The Invisible Children and KONY 2012 or not, Joesph Kony should be stopped. There is no question that what he is doing is wrong. The video, whether exaggerated or not is horrifying, and enough of it is real to know that if this has been going on for at least 20 years, maybe 2012 should be the year.

iPad 3: Does the reality live up to the rumors?

by CHRIS TERCERO
Staff Writer

The Rumors:

If you have been waiting for the iPad 3 to come out, you are not alone. Many people have been anticipating the next iPad since the last iPad came out. When the iPad 2 came out, many people started circulating rumors of the next iPad that wasn’t set to come out for another year, but now that the announcement date is so close, many people keep the rumors coming with indications of things that are really unreasonable. Some of the rumors are pointing towards a new, smaller iPad that will be released shortly after the next iPad. Also, many people think the next iPad won’t even be the iPad 3, as many people call it, but simply an iPad 2s. Although we know many of the rumors most likely aren’t true, there are many key factors that keep arising that may be true.

The next iPad will most likely keep the same shape and screen size, but sport a new retina display similar to the ones found on the new iPod and iPhone; however, the screen will be much larger than the iPod’s and iPhone’s, but will still be as clear as them.

Another rumor is that the next ipad will have LTE. This was rumored in the iPad 2 as well, but it never made it in. Now with AT&T and Verizon having LTE networks, it’s a higher priority for Apple to take advantage of it.

The battery is said to be the same or even bigger with more hours to do the stuff you love on the iPad. With the iPad 2 having 10 hours of battery, the next iPad would be even more amazing to have a longer lasting battery. The battery is such a crucial thing to an electronic device and to have more hours on a battery gives you more time to play games and surf the web.

The camera, a thing every electronic device seems to have nowadays, should be upgraded to an 8MP to match the iPhone 4s. With a better camera, the iPad could beat out all it’s competitors. The camera is something everyone wants, and as phones and tablets get better cameras they will start replacing regular cameras.

The processor; every electronic has to have one, it is the core to the device that makes the electronic work. The next iPad will be getting a faster processor to make the response time between you touching the icon, to it loading. Siri; everyone loves it. Others try to copy it, but the beloved robot helper on the iPhone 4s is finally going to be coming to the next iPad so you can ask all the questions you can come up with.

The Reality:

Enough with the rumors already! Lets get to reality. On Wednesday March 7, 2012 the rumors were put to rest and the new iPad was announced. Many of you may already know the new features of the iPad but if you don’t know about the new iPad here’s what it has.

The new iPad has an iSight 5MP camera that shoots 1080p. The camera has face detection that sets the exposure just right for everyone’s face. It also has an auto stabilizer to make the videos more stable, and not so shaky as they would be on other devices. The cameras optics, software, and processors have all been updated to make the photos it takes stunning.

The retina display that everyone has been anxiously waiting for, was finally announced for the iPad and it features a sharper image than an HDTV, which is pretty impressive. The retina display has four times more pixels than the iPad 2, and 1 million more pixels than an HDTV. The screen resolution is 2048 by 1536, which is twice the resolution than the iPad 2. To make the retina display possible, the engineers at Apple had to elevate the pixels and separate them from their signals to create a crystal clear image that people would love.

Apple also added in voice dictation so if you don’t want to type you can talk to the iPad, and it will know exactly what you said. For the first time ever, an Apple device now runs on the 4G LTE network; it works with any network that runs LTE. Now the iPad will run a lot faster when using data. The 4G network is something that all the devices are upgrading to, so for the iPad to have it, it is now in the battle of 4G. The LTE only added to the other bands that work with other networks, so now, when you go to different countries you can now use your iPad to roam on other 3G networks. And to top off the adding of 4G,  you can now share it with other devices with its personal hot spot if your carrier allows it.

Apple also upgraded the A5 chip to an A5X chip which allows faster processing of images and a faster response time. The chip allows the new iPad to run twice as fast as the previous model, and features a quad-core processor to power all 3.1 million pixels on the display. With the new A5X chip, you won’t feel the new iPad lag in anything it can do. The battery is still able to hold 10 hours of play time, so it is there for you when you need it.

Although somethings might have changed, the iPad still looks, feels, and weighs the nearly the same as the iPad 2. With all these major advancements for Apples new iPad, it will be interesting to see how well it does on the market.

El D Eats- Pink pancakes with pink whipped cream

by TAYLOR HIGGINS
Staff Writer

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Food coloring

Ingredients for Pink Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • food coloring

Bring all ingredients to room temperature, then combine until the batter is slightly lumpy. Be careful not to over-mix the batter, as that results in tough, chewy pancakes. Let the batter sit for about thirty minutes to allow for the baking powder to activate. While waiting for the batter, heat a skillet over medium. In a separate bowl, whisk the heavy cream just until it forms a magma-like consistency. Add the sugar, food coloring, vanilla, and other optional flavorings, then continue to whisk until it forms peaks. If you over-beat this, it will become buttery and weird. So be sure to stop as soon as all the ingredients are incorporated. After about thirty minutes, once your batter has had time to become fluffy and your skillet has reached an adequate temperature, coat the skillet with a light mist of cooking spray, and pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the skillet. As soon as the surface of this pancake is covered in large bubbles, flip it. Once the edges of the pancake stay firmly in place when prodded with a spatula, your pancake should be cooked. Allow the pancakes to cool slightly, then top with whipped cream, butter, or any other delicious toppings of your choosing.

Spring is coming

by MIRIAM SANDERS
Staff Writer

Summer, autumn, winter, spring; the four seasons of the year. Winter is just wrapping up as spring begins to unfold. Spring is the season of bloom. There are flowers everywhere, and 90% of the time, the sun is shining. It is a happy little season filled with sunshine and flowers and all the good things that everyone loves. Right? Well, maybe not. There are are advantages and disadvantages of spring.

Spring time is a grand time. There are way too many flowers in bloom to count. This blooming season happens to be perfect for a gift for your mother on Mother’s Day in May. During spring, the weather is pretty mild. It is a season stuck right in the middle of summer and winter, leaving it warm, but pleasant. This is when girls often wear cute sundresses, revealing those legs that have been hidden under long pants all winter long. There is sun everyday, and contrary to a cloudy day, sun normally lifts the moods of most people. Spring brings Easter, which results in a week of spring break. Spring is a jump start to summer. We start to swim during the spring preparing for summer, if it isn’t too cold. Spring is all about the flowers and warm weather.

Spring time is a living nightmare. From these millions of bloomed flowers, pollen floats around in the air, giving allergies to millions of people. Everyone is sneezing, coughing, rubbing their eyes, or blowing their nose the majority of the time. Spring time definitely uses a lot of tissues. In addition to being a major allergy season, spring cleaning haunts everyone during this season. This season makes us clean out our whole house that has been perfectly fine for the whole year. Also, everyone is sleep deprived because of the annoying time change, spring forward, that occurs during this season. Thanks to spring, we have a weather that seems a little bipolar. You decide to wear a jacket in the morning because it is pleasantly cool, but as soon as you step out at noon, you are swimming in your sweat. Spring time is just plain annoying. There is pollen, allergies, cleaning, time change, and hot, bipolar weather during this season.

Seasons bring a little variety in life. While one person may not like spring, another will. We are bound to favor one season more than the others. Whether we favor spring or not, let’s try to make the best of this season. Go outside, and enjoy those beautiful flowers and warm, pleasant sun.

The Hunger Games

by ALYSSA PENA
Staff Writer

Next week, the premiere of the new movie based off of the popular book series by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, is coming out in theaters on March 23, 2012.

The Hunger Games is an intense and entertaining series filled with suspense, action, and of course, romance. The setting is in a nation called Panem, where it holds 12 different districts, each district sustaining different kinds of jobs, people, and economic standards, but they are all under the authority of the Capitol. Because these Districts once tried to rebel against the Capitol many years before, the Capitol reminds them of this by holding the annual Hunger Games, where they choose a boy and a girl randomly from each district to basically be put in a huge rink and fight to the death, and have all the Districts watch them fight to survive. The child who wins the games will be rewarded with fame and glory for the rest of their lives. The main characters derive from District 12; Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), 16, strives to take care of her mother and her 12 year old sister Primrose “Prim” (Willow Shields) while in hard times. To get more food and save money her and her best friend Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) illegally cross the gates of the district to hunt. When the time for the annual Hunger Games arrive, Katniss’ sister miraculously gets chosen, and Katniss bravely volunteers to be in the Hunger Games to take her place. Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) has also been chosen from District 12 to be in the Hunger Games. After all the tributes for the games have been chosen, they leave their districts in risk of never coming back.

People are going crazy over this movie, because for some they have been anxiously waiting for this movie to be produced moments after finishing the series. The book that started it all, published back in 2008 held the New York Times list for over 100 consecutive weeks. Not only that, but it’s “ebook” version achieved the “Kindle Million Club” by Amazon for selling a million digital copies. But that’s no surprise, because this book won “book of the year” by four different organizations. You can find multiple copies of this book in El Diamante’s own library, and if anybody is thinking of watching this movie, I’d hurry up and pick up the book quick. But I wouldn’t worry about the short time, if you’re anything like most of its readers, you’ll be reading it for hours upon hours at a time before setting it down.

Like all highly anticipated movies, it will have a special midnight release, where you can begin waiting out earlier the day before, March 22, and secure your spot in line. If you aren’t exactly into spending half of your day outside of the movie theatre like I am, you can at least pre-order your tickets at any of Visalia’s three movie theatres. I’ll be in theatre 7 at Galaxy Theatre, just saying…

If this looks like something you may be interested in, I say go for it! It’s one of those stories that really gets it right, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat the whole time. See you next week Miners! May the odds be forever in your favor.

COS Placement Test

by MYRA CHEAH
Staff Writer

On March 20th and 21st, El Diamante will be hosting it’s local junior college’s (COS’s) math and English placement tests during class. Seniors must sign up in advance at the Student Services office with their FASFA information and proof that they have applied to COS, which can be printed off online once the applications are complete.
These tests should not be taken for granted; especially considering the fact that by scoring well on these tests a student will be ensured new classes. Having done well on the test, students will not have to retake classes that have already been completed during high school. At COS, each unit (or class) costs around 75 dollars and can be costly if one does not prepare for the placement tests. Thankfully, El Diamante has provided these tests so that no student has to go out of their way to take them. However, if any students miss these opportunities, they can schedule their own private placement tests at COS.
The allotted time given for each version of the test (math and English) is 55 minutes. There, students will select which subject they last took of math or English for the right test version. If they do well on these tests, next year, at COS, they will be upgraded to the next math or English level. If they don’t score well then they may have to take remedial classes, wasting tons of hours and money.
Also, these placement tests do not need to be only for people who are COS-bound. In later years or summers, if COS resumes it’s summer courses, students can come back to COS without having to deal with these pesky placement tests. Instead of retaking them, they can simply sign up for their classes.
So take note seniors, these placement tests are not a laughing matterand can help one save money and time through the later years. The placement tests should be taken seriously and you should be well prepared. Get a good night’s sleep, wake up in plenty of time to review in the morning, and make sure you have a nutritious breakfast. Good luck miners!
